In Conversation with John Siemon – Building ESG Credibility Through Standards and Accountability

In today’s business environment, ESG leadership demands more than good intentions. It demands evidence.

The era of broad claims about sustainability is ending. Customers, regulators, and partners increasingly expect verifiable data, third-party validation, and clear documentation. At Siemon, we welcome this shift because it aligns with how we’ve always operated: with transparency, precision, and a commitment to measurable outcomes.

“Certifications and disclosures to ‘voluntary’ standards are increasingly called out as compulsory by a growing number of our customers.”

For many organisations, ESG reporting and certifications have historically been treated as optional or marketing-driven. That’s no longer sustainable. Regulations like the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and evolving global standards are turning voluntary frameworks into mandatory requirements.

At Siemon, we see this as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. We believe that robust standards and third-party certifications are critical tools—not just for compliance but for building trust and delivering value across the supply chain.

We are committed to internationally accepted frameworks and certifications across our operations, including:

  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems, ensuring systematic control and continuous improvement of our environmental performance.
  • ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management, supporting safe and healthy workplaces for our teams.
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs): Third-party certified documents that detail the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle, covering categories like Global Warming Potential, Ozone Depletion, and more. All Siemon EPDs are 3rd Party Certified by .
  • Health Product Declarations (HPDs): Providing full chemical inventories down to thresholds of 100 parts per million, including Greenscreen ratings for human and ecological health. All Siemon HPDs are registered and published on the .

These certifications and declarations are fundamental to how we design, manufacture, and deliver solutions.

When it comes to carbon reporting, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are the logical starting point because they’re directly under a company’s control. However, they typically represent only a fraction of the total carbon footprint. For Siemon, Scope 3 emissions account for approximately 95% of our impact. Ignoring them means ignoring the real challenge.

Scope 3 reporting is complex. Unlike direct emissions, it relies on data from suppliers and partners across the value chain. Renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets are not accepted by internationally accepted reporting frameworks like SBTi for Scope 3 because their purpose is to reduce absolute emissions of heat trapping pollutants without offsets. Our approach is to work directly with our suppliers to help them reduce their own Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Then we ask them to do the same with their suppliers, creating a ripple effect of transparency and action across the supply chain.

Because sustainability isn’t just about what we do within our own walls—it’s about the collective impact of every link in the chain.

At Siemon, we believe that accountability and credibility aren’t optional—they’re the standard. This commitment extends beyond regulatory requirements. It reflects the trust our customers place in us and the responsibility we have to deliver solutions that meet both technical and environmental benchmarks.

Our approach is clear:

  • Measure accurately.
  • Disclose transparently.
  • Improve continuously.

That’s the Siemon standard. And as expectations around ESG continue to evolve, we remain committed to leading with integrity, data, action and results backed by objective evidence.
