Siemon Cabling Contractor Brief Highlights the Impact of Termination Speed on Contractor Profitability

June 23, 2015. Watertown, CT – The Siemon Company, a leading manufacturer of high performance low voltage infrastructure solutions, has published a new Contractor Brief entitled “The Impact of Termination Speed on Your Bottom Line.” Developed specifically for network cabling and low voltage installation pros, this brief shows how reducing termination times on individual cabling channels can help contractors bid projects more competitively while improving overall profitability.

Using category 6 UTP connectors as an example, this straightforward and easy to understand brief analyzes representative termination times based on available products and termination methods, applying each to a theoretical 1000-drop cabling installation project. The resulting data compares actual termination times to potential labor estimates for bidding purposes and converts this labor efficiency data to bottom line dollars and cents in a simple step-by step analysis that contractors can easily apply to their real-world projects.

Siemon’s Channel Marketing Manager, Brian Duval developed the analysis and was initially surprised by the results.

“It was obvious going in that faster terminations could allow contractors to reduce their billable labor, but to a contractor that would sound a lot like making less money,” Duval explained. “But as we balanced actual termination times against bid estimates, it was clear that faster termination times could allow contractors to simultaneously build more cushion into their labor estimates and provide cost savings to their customers. They could actually be significantly more profitable on an hour-by-hour basis, and still win bidding wars.”

According to Duval, that combination of increased profitability and more efficient project bidding is a critical message for installers. “We used category 6 terminations as our example, but the basic concept can be applied all over a jobsite. If you can do something faster or more efficiently than your competition, you can lower your bids and win more jobs. If you can do it significantly faster, you can win those jobs, offer great value to your customers, and still enjoy excellent profit margins. Ultimately, speed equals profitability.”
