Siemon launches new site in Czech Republic

October 2006 - Siemon, the global network cabling specialist, has launched a new logistics and manufacturing site in the Czech Republic. The facility, located at Brno, is 2.5 hours southeast from Prague and has been chosen for its central European location and its skilled labour force.

The new Brno facility will serve as Siemon's "pan-EMEA" logistics hub - housing stock and acting as the key distribution centre for the company's markets across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Additionally, manufacturing operations at Brno will be assembling some of the company's copper structured cabling product lines.

Commenting on the choice of the Czech Republic, Siemon's managing director for EMEA Keith Astin said that the new facility was opened in response to significant growth across the EMEA region and was necessary to support the company's aggressive future expansion plans. Brno was chosen for its accessibility, making for easy logistics. He also described the company's service level objectives as a decision driver and explained: "This move will ensure that our distribution partners in EMEA will receive the highest level of service and enables us to react quickly to the needs of an extremely demanding market. For example, the assembly operation here at Brno will improve the delivery time for all our channel partners and customers."

The new site was formally opened at an event for Siemon's distributors and channel partners. John Siemon, vice president of global operations, cut the ribbon before Ales Tichy, the local operations manager, guided guests around the facility.

The tour of the 1900 square metre site, which is now fully operational after a four month commissioning, included the massive warehouse, assembly floor, and distribution areas plus offices for engineering, planning, logistics, finance and management.

Strategic view of the structured cabling market

Three European technical managers from Siemon used the state of the art facility to present their views on 'the future of cabling' - voicing the opinion that Category 7 is the way forward. To illustrate one aspect of the technical benefits of this system Alberto Zucchinali, technical manager for Siemon Italy, gave a live demonstration of cabling sharing across the company's TERA® Category7/7A cabling system.

Cable sharing is the practice of running more than one application each over different pairs of a twisted-pair copper telecommunications channel. Although the concept of cable sharing is accepted by telecommunications professionals, Siemon's view is that it is only now starting to become a recognised practice because it reduces costs, simplifies cable management, and enables the converging of applications onto one media type in commercial building environments.

John Siemon also presented his view on the future trends in the data market. He majored on the growing market acceptance of fully-shielded (Category 7 or Class F) cabling systems with the inherent benefits of high performance for applications ranging from power delivery over balanced cabling to cluster computing. He said: "Standardisation of 10GBASE-T and future cabling system requirements, such as Category 6A/Class EA, has resulted in a sharp upswing in demand for screened cabling, especially in historically UTP (unshielded) markets like the US, UK and Asia-Pacific countries."

Siemon sees this trend as a market-driven response to the advantages of screened cabling solutions as the most robust option for 10Gb/s transmission. Screened solutions have a distinct advantage in terms of noise immunity, particularly alien crosstalk - a critical parameter for 10GBASE-T. The profile of screened solutions, including Siemon's 10G 6A™ F/UTP and Tera solutions has clearly been elevated by this latest Ethernet standard. By virtue of their individually screened pairs, category 7/class F solutions minimize both inter- and intra-cable interference. They are now appearing in the specifications of the industry's top IT infrastructure designers and consultants.
