NVCC, Siemon Announce Major Endowment Agreement

Watertown, CT — Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) and The Siemon Company, of Watertown Connecticut, today announced a substantial endowment agreement between the college and the company.

The agreement calls for Siemon Company, a world leader in the development and manufacture of telecommunications cabling systems, to donate $280,000 in scholarship funds and equipment to the college. It will establish six full scholarships to the Engineering and Technology program and fund the purchase of state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and software that will be incorporated into the program.

In recognition of the agreement, The Siemon Company was presented the first Naugatuck Valley Community College Engineering Technology Education Partner In Progress Award today. NVCC President Dr. Richard L. Sanders gave the award to Siemon Company President Carl N. Siemon.

"The Siemon Company has been a tremendous supporter of technology education," said Engineering and Technology Division Director Raymond Castellani."We want them to receive the recognition that they clearly deserve. Their efforts and contributions have helped both the college and numbers of past and present students. Hundreds of students will now benefit from the rapid-prototype machine, ProEngineer software, and scholarships."

This fall, three full-time engineering technology students received Siemon scholarships. Siemon will endow a total of six full scholarships in the fall of 2001. The company's donation of state-of-the-art manufacturing software has already had a big impact on the engineering and technology division program, said Professor Paul Kieffer, who chairs the college's computer-aided drafting/design program.

"ProEngineer is widely used in Fortune 500 companies," said Kieffer. "It is a design tool that uses parametric, feature-based 3-D modeling. ProEngineer is very important because it allows engineers to rapidly modify their designs as new products are being developed. It's just not possible to work as quickly or as accurately using only two-dimensional modeling."

Professor Kieffer said ProEngineer is the perfect addition to the AutoCAD 2000 and Solid Works software that his computer drafting/design (CAD/D) students presently use. It will permit the maximum use of a new rapid-prototype machine, which is also included in the agreement. Castellani said rapid prototyping will play a major role in the revival of manufacturing in Connecticut.

Castellani noted community support is a long tradition for the Siemon family. The Siemon Company was started four generations ago by Carl F. Siemon in 1903. Siemon's cabling systems and its ability to design, manufacture and assemble its own products have made the company a formidable competitor in the telecommunications industry. In November 1999, the Siemon family opened the firm's new 172,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Watertown.

"The Siemon Company is proud to support Naugatuck Valley Community College's continuing efforts to provide superior educational and professional opportunities to the community," said Siemon President Carl N. Siemon. "A skilled, technical work force is essential to the economic success of community and State. Siemon has been a major employer In Connecticut for nearly 100 years. Our success is linked to the talent, skills and knowledge of the people in our community. We are pleased to have schools like Naugatuck Valley nearby, with a strong commitment to providing the tools students need to succeed in today's competitive business world."

"In addition to the scholarships, we are also providing equipment to support the advanced learning curriculum at NVCC," said Siemon. "Students will be able to utilize state-of-the-art tools to keep pace with the new and emerging technologies. We are also looking forward to assisting with the development of the college's curriculum to address the needs of manufacturing companies such as ours. We hope that other companies in the area will also support NVCC's initiatives."
