Singapore's UE Square

Gets Its Intelligence From The Siemon Cabling System

Imagine living and working in a building that lets you get on your PC to access information on the availability of gaming facilities, restaurant vacancies or the location of shops and offices. Imagine rerouting a call from your apartment to your office to a colleague's desk instantly. Imagine switching on your apartment air conditioning as you're walking out of your office after a long, hot day. Or imagine a building constantly monitoring every function from elevator operation to security to room temperature.

It's not imagination, it's a fact for tenants at the completed UE Square complex in Singapore. Designed by world-renowned architect Kenzo Tange, the facility boasts twin office towers, residential units, service apartments, a shopping area and a basement parking garage. The complex was developed by United Engineers Ltd., with support from NTT International Corporation, an intelligent building consulting firm.

UE Square is a prime example of today's "intelligent" building. It gets its brains from the Siemon Cabling System® in partnership with Belden, a world-case cable supplier. A network of over a million feet of fiber optic and UTP (unshielded twisted-pair) cabling gives the complex a high IQ in five ways:

  • Offices are completely pre-wired. When tenants move into the building Siemon datacom and electrical points are already installed, so there is no need for renovation or retrofitting. The cost saving, time saving and convenience aspect of pre-wiring makes UE Square attractive to potential tenants.
  • A user-friendly Tenant Information System helps people navigate around the complex. the capacity of the Siemon fiber optic network to carry volumes of data allows UE tenants to use their PCs to access information on various shops, businesses and services within the complex. Visitors can obtain the same information using computerized kiosks that are strategically placed throughout the facility.
  • A Personal Handyphone System provides robust functionality. Siemon technology supports this completely digital system and allows calls to be rerouted from a person's desktop to wherever they are in the building. In addition, a resident can turn on apartment lights, the water heater, even air conditioning while on the road.
  • A powerful Building Management System keeps operations running smoothly. With the Siemon Cabling System in place throughout the UE complex, monitoring every building function becomes a reality. Interactive voice-answering systems, telephone- linked alarm systems, cardkey security controls, closed-circuit TV and video intercoms detect faults and even automatically page the appropriate engineers and technicians so that service repairs are quick.
  • A cabling system that's wired for the future. Thanks to Siemon's high-speed cabling connections and open design, occupants of UE Square are ready for the future...whatever it brings. Provisions have been made to further expand intelligent features and services — whether it's a simple as adding incoming telephone lines or as complicated as accommodating a new generation of multimedia technology.

All of these services and capabilities are dependent on a sophisticated cabling system. Advanced transmission performance, wide-bandwidth, and network reliability are essential. When it comes to intelligent building cabling, Siemon is a smart choice.
