Siemon furnishes IKEA with a state-of-the art network infrastructure

April 2016 - Siemon, a leading global network infrastructure specialist, has announced that its state-of-the-art cabling solutions have been installed in two of IKEA's brand new retail outlets in the Belgian cities of Mons and Hasselt. The stores opened to the public in February 2016 with Siemon cabling technology facilitating a wide range of applications for staff while enhancing the visitor experience.

IKEA is a worldwide phenomenon that was founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, who is now listed as one of the world's richest people. From relatively humble beginnings, the company now operates 373 stores in 47 countries and its vision is to offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.

Over 716 million people have visited IKEA's stores, a figure that will soon increase with the addition of the Mons and Hasselt stores. Both new build environments cover a combined area of 20,000m² and have been designed to accommodate the latest Internet protocol (IP) based functionality throughout. Having worked with IKEA regularly over almost 10 years, the company's Benelux account manager, René Proost, was called in to suggest the most appropriate structured cabling platform to meet the company's objectives.

'IKEA relies upon its cabling infrastructure to allow the seamless operation of its stores, so having a system that is robust, reliable and future proof is a must,' commented Proost. 'After considering the various options we decided that a solution comprising our Z-MAX® category 6 unshielded copper cabling would be implemented, supported by OM3 multimode optical fibre cabling from the XGLO™ range in the backbone.'

Installed by Siemon Certified Installer (CI), Computacenter NV and supported by Saifor Benelux, Siemon's distribution partner for Belgium, the Z-MAX Category 6 system employs the same fast and simple, termination process as the renowned Z-MAX 6A technology. Using Siemon's Z-TOOL™, outlets can be terminated in less than 45 seconds from start to finish, including cable preparation. In addition, it utilises the company's linear termination module, which allows conductors to be laced quickly and naturally into position without crossing pairs. Maintaining and protecting cable pair geometry optimises transmission performance and consistency while removing a significant noise source present in all other RJ-45 outlets.

The project was successfully completed on time and Ken Struelens, IKEA's retail IT manager, is delighted with the result. He concluded, 'Having already experienced the benefits of Siemon's innovative cabling solutions in our Wilrijk outlet near Antwerp, it seemed logical to work together again on the Hasselt and Mons stores. I'm confident that the finished installation will meet all of our requirements and having a 20 year system warranty offers us significant peace of mind.'
