Valerie Maguire joins new IEEE Next Generation BASE-T Study Group

The IEEE Standards Association has just announced the formation of the IEEE 802.3 Next Generation BASE-T Study Group. This group is designed to measure global industry interest and needs in the next generation of the IEE 802.3 BASE-T family of technologies for Ethernet transmission over twisted-pair cabling. The group will be made up of distinguished technical professionals from the industry and infrastructure specialist Siemon, today announced that director of standards and technology, Valerie Maguire, will be joining the group.

The IEEE states that IEEE 802.3 BASE-T represents the highest-volume Ethernet port type today and is widely deployed for physical-layer connectivity in data centres. IEEE 802.3 BASE-T technologies typically utilize server-uplink data rates of Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet today, but platform transitions and systems innovation on all fronts are driving new networking requirements, says the standards association.

Commenting on her participation in the new, Next Generation BASE-T Study Group, Valerie Maguire enthused "The work of this group is especially exciting because, for the first time, a balanced twisted-pair Ethernet application is being created to suit the unique needs of a very specific environment; the data centre. As a result, specifications that were once considered 'untouchable', such as channel length and topology, are open for study and possible modification.

"The formation of the IEEE 802.3 Next-Generation BASE-T Study Group puts to bed any lingering rumours that 10GBASE-T is the end of the line for Ethernet and balanced twisted-pair cabling," she stated. "I would recommend that anyone with a responsibility for data centre cabling, monitor the activities of this Study Group very closely."

Explaining further, Bill Woodruff, chair of the IEEE 802.3 Next-Generation BASE-T Study Group, said, "Because of the ability of current IEEE 802.3 BASE-T technologies to interoperate with legacy versions via the standard's 'autonegotiation' feature and thereby support cost-effective infrastructure upgrades, extension to 40 Gigabit Ethernet and higher speeds will be required in coming years. IEEE 802.3 BASE-T continues to be one of the most successful technologies within the greater IEEE 802.3 family, and our new study group will gauge the timing and needs of extending the standard to support industry needs for server connectivity and other applications."

The expertise of Valerie Maguire, BSEE, focuses on balanced twisted-pair and optical fibre telecommunications cabling and transmission theory. She is vice chair of the TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Engineering Committee, vice chair of the TIA TR-42.7 Copper Cabling Subcommittee, TIA TR-42 appointed liaison to IEEE 802.3, treasurer of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group, secretary of the IEEE 802.3 Maintenance Task Force, and clause 1 editor of pending IEEE Std 802.3-2012. In addition, Valerie has authored over 45 technical articles and engineering papers, holds one U.S. Patent, and received the 2008 Harry J. Pfister Award for Excellence in Telecommunications.
