Newly Minted Mentors to Meet Mentees
Hartford, Connecticut — Thirteen employees of The Siemon Company who have volunteered to mentor sixth graders at Watertown's Heminway Park School are scheduled to tour the school for the first time next week to meet with their young mentees.
Led by Heminway Park School principal Janice Pond, the tour is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:00, Thursday, October 17. Following the initial meetings between mentors and mentees, Siemon employees will begin going to the school once a week to meet with their young person for the duration of the school years.
Working with Susan Weinberger, a nationally-known expert on mentoring and consultant to the Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, the Watertown program was jointly developed by Jeannine Lawton of The Siemon Company, Pond, and The Governor's Prevention Partnership.
"More than 2,000 Connecticut children are on waiting lists for existing mentoring programs and an estimated 140,000 are in special need of a mentor. The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership promotes the growth and development of children through relationships with caring adults. We know The Siemon Company shares our concern. And that's why we are particularly pleased and grateful to have worked with the company and Heminway Park School in order to launch this program," says program director Jill Spineti of The Governor's Prevention Partnership.
The Siemon Company is the first company in Watertown to establish a formal mentoring program. As a 100-year-old local family-owned telecommunications company, the business employs over 500 people in Watertown in the manufacture of components for cabling systems and computer networks.
The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, a program of The Governor's Prevention Partnership, fosters and supports mentoring programs as a way of promoting the growth and development of children through relationships with caring adults. The Governor's Prevention Partnership is a public-private partnership whose mission is to keep Connecticut drug-free and safe by building programs that prevent youth substance abuse and violence.
