The Siemon Company and Thomas & Betts Sign Agreement for Category 7 Connector Technology

Watertown, CT — The Siemon Company, Watertown, Connecticut and Thomas & Betts, Memphis, Tennessee, have settled a lawsuit relating to category 7 shielded connector technology. The legal action between the two companies has been dismissed and Siemon maintains a position of non-infringement.

Siemon's TERA™ connector is a compact plug-and-socket design that isolates individual contact pairs in fully shielded chambers to form the equivalent of four twinaxial transmission channels in a single connector. The four-pair TERA™ connector is capable of performance beyond the requirements set forth by ISO/IEC for category 7 connectors. The outlet, in combination with fully shielded cable and available 1-pair, 2-pair and 4-pair plugs, enable direct connection of up to four work area devices to a single port without adapters and without risk of signal interference. Its ability to support applications designed to work over any category of twisted-pair cabling, plus broadband video - an application formerly restricted to coax - elevates the range of applications served by twisted-pair cabling to a new level. TERA's unsurpassed performance and installer-friendly termination have earned widespread industry acceptance.

T&B has been a recognized pioneer in the development of shielded, high performance connectors and cabling systems. T&B manufactures the ALL-LAN™ Interconnection System, a cabling system designed to terminate fully shielded or PiMF (Pairs In Metal Foil) cable. The ALL-LAN™ hermaphroditic connector is the first to use shielded quadrant technology.

The confidential agreement grants Siemon the right to use and to sublicense intellectual property owned by Thomas & Betts. Siemon’s intellectual property, together with T&B’s patents on shielded connectors, further advance Siemon’s leadership position in the field of high performance telecommunications cabling. Their portfolio of over 300 patents is further strengthened with the addition of T&B’s US patents 5,593,311 entitled “Shielded Compliant Plate Connector”; 5,564,940 entitled “Electrical Connector Having a Conductor Holding Block”; and 6,077,122 entitled “Electrical Connector Having an Improved Connector Shield and a Multipurpose Strain Relief”, as well as T&B's corresponding patents and applications throughout the world. Siemon has exclusive rights to sublicense these patents with the TERA™ interface globally.

John Siemon, VP of Engineering at The Siemon Company, commented, “With this agreement, Siemon has completely resolved this patent dispute. Manufacturers who license and use this technology from us are free to market and sell their category 7 products anywhere in the world.” Siemon adds, “T&B was the first company to obtain intellectual property on these types of connectors. Their continued research has led to new patents that enable even higher performance than their original design. The option for Siemon and our licensees to use this technology for ongoing development expands the potential for achieving higher performance and global market acceptance for this interface.”

The interface used in Siemon's TERA™ connector is being internationally standardized as IEC 61076-3-104. It is called-out as the “fallback” telecommunications outlet interface for category 7/class F in the draft second edition of the ISO/IEC 11801 (IT - Cabling for customer premises), and is the specified balanced cabling interface for home entertainment and multimedia (HEM) applications in the draft first edition of ISO/IEC 15018 (IT - Integrated cabling for residential and SOHO environments). The closure of this legal suit provides additional assurance to ISO, IEC and other standards bodies that connectors having this interface can be openly standardized, adopted, licensed and sold anywhere in the world. The execution of this agreement allows Siemon to market and sell the TERA™ connector worldwide and eliminates these legal claims related to technology used in the product.
