China Galaxy Securities Trades Up To Category 6
One of the most critical business sectors requiring high-speed data transmission with the utmost efficiency and reliability is, without question, the field of finance and securities. When dealing with stocks, information cannot be delayed for even one second, for a one-second delay can cause fathomless losses in terms of both lost revenue and damaged reputation. The structured cabling system for security enterprises is just like a highway on which information flows at speeds measured in gigabits per second. The network must be secure, highly efficient, stable and redundant. No mishap is allowed. In addition, the structured cabling system must integrate seamlessly with the network equipment. This was the goal of China Galaxy Securities when it built its new state-of-the-art headquarters and information center.
China Galaxy Securities Co., Ltd. is the largest securities company in China. It was formally established by a five-state owned bank system and is led directly by China's Central Finance Committee. China Galaxy currently has 177 offices throughout the country and, expecting continued growth, has invested several hundred million RMB (Chinese currency equivalent to tens of millions of U.S. dollars) to build a new state-of-the-art headquarters on Finance Street in Beijing. Before designing its information center, China Galaxy spent a year validating various structured cabling systems and, as a result, selected The Siemon Company's category 6 cabling system to build a stable, highly efficient information platform.
A Dual-Component Information Platform
China Galaxy's information platform is made up of two components - the Siemon category 6 structured cabling system and a satellite transmission system. The satellite transmission system forms a remote transmission network with the Shenzhen and Shanghai Stock Exchanges via a 6-port satellite antennae on each its east and west roofs and connects to the China national main fiber network. The category 6 structured cabling system uses a star-shaped physical topology and was designed to meet the requirements of various computer network protocols. Several thousand multimedia information drops and over 2000 fiber products were installed in the project and, in key work areas, fiber-to-the-desk was installed to maximize information transmission.
China Galaxy's Strict Requirements for the Structured Cabling System
China Galaxy was very strict when choosing its facilities and desired the most advanced and
reliable cabling system on which to build its network communication platform. The transmission requirements and mechanical capability of the cabling system were as follows:
Transmission Requirements
- High-efficiency: Enough bandwidth to adapt to the highly volatile stock market and intense competition.
- Stability: Reliable transmission capability to ensure smooth stock network transactions.
- Redundancy: Stock trading consists of enormous amounts of critical data. The system needed to be built to provide full backup redundancy in case of primary failure.
Mechanical Capability
- Aesthetics: All cabling system products, from the work area module to the telecom closet, had to match the aesthetic image of Galaxy Securities.
- Integration: A highly integrated fiber-to-the-desktop solution with plug-and-play capability for easy management.
- Interoperability: Support for a variety of computers, network types, communication speeds and topology structures in accordance with international communication standards.
- Flexibility: Easy to move, add or modify the work area; easy to install and maintain.
Due to the advanced needs and strict requirements, China Galaxy Securities chose to install The Siemon Company's System 6® cabling system. The client's stringent requirements for building the cabling system were a challenge for both the cabling products as well as for the installer. After a thorough plan the Siemon Company and its Certified Installer designed a category 6 cabling solution that met all of China Galaxy's goals.
The Siemon Company was the first company in the world to offer a category 6 cabling system. Siemon's System 6 offers high-speed bandwidth 2.5 times greater than category 5e, and PS ACR value 300% greater than category 5e. All parts of the channel are stringently tested and are guaranteed to exceed category 6 requirements. System 6 passed the validation testing established by the China Information Industry and the Shanghai testing center of the China Quality and Technology Supervising Bureau. It has also passed the strict electronic testing and verification of third party laboratories such as DELTA and ITS ETL SEMKO.
System Scheme and Product Selection
The structured cabling system at China Galaxy Securities is a star-shaped topology at both the backbone and horizontal levels.
![]() China Information World newspaper, one of China's top IT publications, honored The Siemon Company with its "Excellent Case Application" Award for the System 6 cabling system installed at the new China Galaxy Securities headquarters. |
The center of the backbone is located in the main computer room and extends to each floor through conduit. Inside the conduit are fiber and large-capacity twisted-pair copper cables. At the horizontal level, star-shaped centers are located in the wiring room on each floor. The horizontal twisted-pair cable extends from patch panels to each work area location. This cabling infrastructure forms a 2-level management system, with every center of the star-shaped structure being a sub-system of administration. The connection, configuration and provisioning of the entire cabling system is managed through this two-level system.
The headquarters building of China Galaxy Securities is now up and running profitably and efficiently. The structured cabling system — made possible by Siemon products — is operating smoothly and has become the highlight of the headquarters building project. In fact, The Siemon Company won the "Excellent Case Application" Award issued by China Information World newspaper, one of the most respected IT publications in China, for its cabling system installation at China Galaxy. It is without a doubt that the new Galaxy building will become a showcase among new industry constructions in China.
Category 6 cabling systems have a market share of over 30 percent in the world today and it is estimated to reach about 70 percent by the year 2005. Category 6 cabling systems support gigabit and other advanced network applications. With the emergence of 1G Ethernet and 10G Ethernet, the physical layer will soon need to support transmission rates up to 10Gb/s over category 6 balanced twisted-pair cabling.
Over 50% of Siemon copper products shipped are Category 6.
