Siemon Interconnect Solutions Joins Open Compute Project as a Community Member

August 24th, 2016, Watertown, CT - Siemon Interconnect Solutions, a business unit of Siemon that provides custom network infrastructure solutions to OEMs, value-added resellers and system integrators, is pleased to announce participation as a Community Member in the Open Compute Project (OCP). The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a collaborative community focused on redesigning hardware technology to efficiently support the growing demands on compute infrastructure.

The Open Compute Project is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of infrastructure technology and energy consumption through continued evolution in energy and material efficiency. The OCP evaluates the influence of all components within the data center ecosystem, leading to optimized energy, space and material use as well as reduced environmental impact.

Specifically, the Open Compute server's vanity-free design eliminates nearly 6 pounds of material per server, reducing the amount of materials that need to be produced, transported, assembled, and eventually, disassembled. "Designing out," or excluding, all non-essential features and non-relevant elements from the Open Compute servers allows for a custom chassis that minimizes the overall part count, accelerates assembly, and removes extraneous elements such as a front panel, paint and logos. In addition to reducing non-essential materials and processes, OCP network equipment is designed to operate in a higher-temperature environment, reducing the overall cooling load required in a data center.
