For Immediate Release Smart cabling gives Hamersley Iron miners advanced communications cost effectivelyPERTH, October 27. Miners at a remote site in the Pilbara region are enjoying world-class connectivity in their new accommodation, including easy contact with the outside world by telephone, high speed Internet and email, plus both pay TV and free-to-air TV. These systems were installed more cost effectively than is usual for leading edge communications, and are easier to manage and operate, because they are all available via a single outlet using TERA 10G Cat 7 cabling from Siemon. Kanishka Panthirana, engineer with Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), the leading project delivery firm that designed and installed the 64 three-room units' communications setup in the construction village at Hamersley Iron's Tom Price mine, says use of a single cable system to deliver such a range of diverse functions made installation easier, more effective and ultimately less expensive. "We found that only one product could deliver what we wanted," said Kanishka. "Siemon's TERA 10G Cat 7 cabling is unique. It is an end-to-end sheathed cable capable of delivering dissimilar services in a single cable sheath without disrupting any of the services. "We found that the single TERA Cat 7 cabling was more cost effective than the alternative of running three cables into each room - either three Cat 5s or a combination of Cat 5 for the phone, Cat 6 for the Internet, and coaxial for TV." The Siemon TERA 10G is a four-pair cable with individual shields on each pair, whose outlet design allows installers to build the pairs at each end - in the communications room and in units in the accommodation block. This means that a single cable only is required for each outlet: one pair for the phone, one for pay TV and two pairs for the Internet. In the communications room, incoming data arrives via two satellite dishes: one for Internet and telephones, and the other for pay TV. When installed as part of a TERA solution, as in Hamersley units, each pair of TERA cables delivers up to 1.2GHz of bandwidth - twice that of Category 7/ Class F specifications. As well as high speed voice and data applications, the extra bandwidth is capable of supporting demanding applications like IP-based video on demand. This can be supported simultaneously with voice and data, using a single 4-pair fully shielded (S/FTP) cable. Kanishka Pathirana said: "The TERA cabling also future-proofs Hamersley's accommodation because it would also allow applications like security, CCTV and video-on-demand to use the existing cabling." "It was valuable to have a single vendor and Siemon's technical people were a big help," said Kanishka. Hamersley Iron is the first mining company in Australia to use TERA cabling to supply telecomms to accommodation units. Traditionally workers at remote mining sites have had little to do other than work, exercise and sleep. The new communications setup puts them in touch with the outside world, allowing them to talk to friends and relatives by phone, watch videos or pay TV, use email, search the Web or shop on the Internet.
