The Siemon Company Wins Environmental Award

Watertown, CT — The Siemon Company, a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of telecommunications connecting hardware and premise cabling systems, proudly announces that it has recently won the 2001 State of Connecticut Green Circle Award. This award, given by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, is granted each year to companies and individuals for promoting pollution prevention, waste reduction, natural resources conservation, and environmental awareness…ultimately improving the quality of the environment in Connecticut.

This year, The Siemon Company was selected along with other Connecticut businesses including Pratt & Whitney, Pitney Bowes, Inc., Frito-Lay, Inc., and the United States Coast Guard Academy. “These Connecticut award winners voluntarily contributed significant time and resources to their businesses and community and helped illustrate that pollution prevention is a viable management approach for protecting the State’s public health and environment,” said Arthur J. Rocque, Jr., Commissioner of the State of CT DEP.

The Siemon Company won the award for its implementation of an innovative, energy efficient air compression system that reduced the company's electricity consumption by 30% in its Dynamic Building manufacturing plant.

Siemon won the award for cutting its electricity use by 30 percent through the implementation of an innovative, energy efficient compressed air system in its Dynamic Building, a manufacturing facility that houses plastic injection molding, progressive metal stamping, CNC programming, sheetmetal fabrication, and automated production and assembly machinery. To help maximize energy efficiency, the new system includes features such as a premium efficient motor, two-stage rotary screw, variable frequency drive, and cycling refrigerated dryer. Jeff DuPaul, Siemon’s assistant plant engineer, explained, “Not only did this system help the company, but it was something that was environmentally positive. Every year we try to do at least one environmental improvement project such as this.” The result of this new system implementation is that Siemon can now meet its compressed air needs while lowering its energy consumption in the building by 30% — or approximately $10,000 savings per month!

The Siemon Company proudly accepted the 2001 Green Circle Award in a ceremony held on October 3, 2001. Siemon has a long-standing reputation for its environmental consciousness. Over the years, it has won numerous awards including the William O. Jeffrey III Irmco Environmental Improvement Award, a CBIA Environmental Success Award, induction into the EPA’s New England Star Track Program, two State of CT DEP Green Circle awards, and ISO 14001 certification.
