Siemon, Cisco, Philips and Dimension Data hold intelligent buildings seminar with BORAQS in Kenya

April 2016 - Sustainability in the built environment was the focus of a seminar held in Nairobi, Kenya in March and hosted by Siemon, a leading global network infrastructure specialist, and the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS). Attended by over 190 industry professionals, the event was supported by Cisco, Philips, Dimension Data and Mart Networks Group, with speakers discussing every aspect of building services in intelligent buildings.

This seminar was part of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programme and the invited audience included architects, mechanical and electrical consultants, quantity surveyors, electrical and telecoms engineers. Over the breakfast session attendees learned from Siemon and partners on key technology trends that are causing a shift in the way buildings are designed and constructed and the increasing role sustainability plays in the built environment.

Executive officer, Mwongera Rukaria, opened the event on behalf of BORAQS and introduced 'Sustainability of the Building Environment in the Case of Intelligent Buildings'. The first keynote was then given by Siemon's sales manager for Africa, Iyer Sivakumar, who presented how Siemon's ConvergeIT can turn structured cabling into a critical building asset with his talk, 'cabling into the future of intelligent buildings'. He explained how this approach reduces costs, simplifies application deployment, enhances the workplace experience and maximizes the potential to qualify for all physical layer and audiovisual innovation technology credits.

Dimension Data followed with an exploration of Smart Buildings, introduced by Wolf Stinnes, solutions architect smart cities and IoT. He explained how an intelligent building can provide its owners, operators and occupants with a responsive, effective and supportive environment. John Gitau, manager systems engineering at Cisco, next discussed the workplace of the future and digital building infrastructure, with a focus on smart buildings designed with a secure, enterprise-grade network.

Intelligent lighting was the subject presented by Maru Kuka of Philips Lighting, with the view on how this can be the next step towards connected buildings. Concluding the session, Aunally Maloo of Mart Networks Group, explained to attendees how end to end solutions for intelligent cabling infrastructure can facilitate buildings of the future.

Commenting on the event, Iyer Sivakumar, of Siemon concluded, "Intelligent buildings is a subject of growing significance globally and in Africa and we are committed to sharing our expertise in network infrastructure that can empower organisations to achieve all the efficiencies that a smart approach can afford, whilst delivering technical advantage and longterm sustainability. We were proud to host this event with BORAQS and were grateful to our partners for supporting us in presenting a multi-dimensional insight on how intelligent buildings today can build an environment for the future."
