Siemon helps BICSI spread its message of ICT knowledge and skill advancement in Nigeria

September 2015 - Siemon, a leading global network infrastructure specialist, recently sponsored and took part in the inaugural 2015 BICSI Middle East and Africa - Nigeria Conference & Exhibition. The event attracted over 200 delegates, who heard from industry experts about the role information and communications technology (ICT) will continue to play in nation building and the advancement of one of Africa's largest economies.

Often referred to as the Giant of Africa, Nigeria is set to be the first country in the continent with an economy larger than $1tn and it has also been projected by the United States National Intelligence Council (NIC) to be among the handful of countries that could determine global economic trends by 2030. This assertion was supported recently by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which stated that Nigeria's economy is to grow faster than those of France and UK by 2030.

The 2015 BICSI Nigeria Conference & Exhibition took place at the prestigious Muson Centre in Lagos. Installers, consultants and end users from a variety of vertical sectors including telecommunications, oil and gas, finance and the public sector, heard experts speak about a diverse range of subjects including the latest network infrastructure technology and standards, 100 Gigabit Ethernet testing, optical fibre inspection, and data centre design and specification.

The event was opened by BICSI Nigeria country chair, Boye Oyerinde, who welcomed all delegates and said, 'BICSI Nigeria is working to reposition the country's ICT industry in a way that will provide a standard requirement for knowledge, which can assist with the development of both the private and public sectors of the economy.'

Siemon's technical manager for Africa, Stefan Naude, gave a presentation titled Where is Africa on Data Centre Cabling? He addressed a number of key technology and standards related issues, including the latest developments on copper and optical fibre cabling solutions and how these should be utilised within data centre environments to ensure maximum, reliability, uptime and future proofing.

Presenters were given a five-minute opportunity to tell delegates about a key piece of their company's product portfolio. Naude chose to discuss Siemon's V800 cabinet, which is designed to provide a robust, high performance enclosure that is cost effective for high-density data centre environments, due to its easy accessibility and thermal efficiency based features and accessories.

Siemon's business account manager for West Africa, Olajide Olagbenro, welcomed delegates who visited the Siemon exhibition stand. A wide range of the company's industry leading products and systems were on display including the aforementioned V800 cabinet, the Z-MAX and TERA copper cabling solutions, intelligent PDUs and the MapIT G2 next generation intelligent infrastructure management (IIM) solution for physical layer network management.

Commenting on the success of the event, Olagbenro said, 'I am delighted that Siemon was able to contribute to the first BICSI Nigeria Conference & Exhibition. The fact that so many people took time out to find about the latest developments in enterprise and data centre network infrastructure technology highlights just how importantly ICT is taken in Nigeria. Taking part also put Siemon firmly in the spotlight and gave us excellent visibility in a country where we have already experienced high levels of success - something that we are looking to build on in the future.'
